What is SMSF?

A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) is a private Australian superannuation fund that you manage yourself, giving you full control over your retirement savings and investment strategies. Unlike public or industry super funds, the members of an SMSF—up to six people—are typically also the trustees, meaning they are legally responsible for all investment decisions, compliance, tax management, and legal obligations. While SMSFs offer greater flexibility to invest in a wider range of assets like residential or commercial real estate, direct shares, and collectibles, they require significant time, financial knowledge, and ongoing administration to ensure full compliance with Australian tax and superannuation laws.
